Lacquers can be plated to produce master/father disks, mother disks, and stampers. Each lacquer can produce one Master (sometimes called a “Father”). The master can be used as a stamper but if it is it cannot be duplicated later. Each Master can be plated to produce up to ten Mothers and each Mother can produce up to ten Stampers.
Why does this matter?
A Stamper can only press 500 to 1000 records before its quality degrades. If we want to press more than 500 copies of a record, it is more economical to plate another stamper from the Mother than it is to cut a new Lacquer and plate a new Master. While stampers can be stored for future use, any damage to the stamper will affect the sound on the records it produces so storage safety is critical.
